Who We Are

Change the Names was conceived by the Chapel Hill Friends Meeting. We are a growing group of concerned citizens, a grassroots movement committed to changing the many street signs that uphold a racist past. We will petition the Chapel Hill Town Council for replacement of offensive signs with signage that memorializes the lives of those who have inspired the very best in all of us.

Chapel Hill Demographics from 2020 US Census

Total population: 61,960, White: 70%, Women: 53%, Asian: 13%, Black: 10%, Hispanic/Latino: 6%

According to a recent story by The Daily Tar Heel, the 2020 census shows that the population of Chapel hill has grown by 8% since the 2010 census and almost 90% of that growth is residents who identify as Black, Hispanic or Asian. As of 2020, the minority population is approximately 1/3 of the total population.

While the vast majority of Chapel Hill residents are White, over half of the total population is female. Name changes that completely ignore the majority population are neither inclusive or equitable.

Change the Names will select new names which reflect the diversity of Chapel Hill. There should be Female, Black, White, Asian, and Hispanic candidates for street name changes.
